Are you being honest with yourself?
Have you given yourself and your Construction Business a reality check lately?
I am talking about an honest to goodness no rose colored glasses close up look in the mirror?
Did you like what you see or did you just ignore all the nasty and ugly stuff?
Every contractor tells themselves some little white lies sometimes. We can weave some of the best stories you can imagine to make ourselves feel better just to avoid the pain of the truth.
Be warned! There are real consequences when you skate around the truth.
Burying your head in the sand does not do you any good. Time marches on and time is not your friend. If your situation is bad or going bad time will not solve your problems, doing nothing not only does not help solve your problems it just lets your problems get worse and worse.
You set out in business with a vision of doing great things and building a great company. Even if things are not what you want them to be today not being honest with yourself isn’t going to help your situation. This is a time that you need clarity and honestly about what your situation really is and what your real issues are. The bottom line is the sooner you come clean with yourself the sooner you can seek out and get the help you need and build your better tomorrow.
Just like constructing a solid building you need to start with a sound foot and foundation then work your way up. It is the same in your construction business. If you build your business footings on soft unstable ground the foundation will never stand up over time and sooner or later crumble under the weight of company structure as it grows. Fibbing to yourself or even just not acknowledging the truth will delay your companies inevitable collapse. Now is the time to look at and own up to the truth, take responsibility…it’s the only way to get back on the road to getting your company and your personal life back to a healthy place.
So here is a little truth or dare set of questions. These are some typical contractor coaching questions for you to ponder and answer truthfully.
Be completely honest with yourself.
- If you had to start my business over tomorrow would I do the same way I am doing it now?
- Do I work like an Owner or just a glorified worker bee?
- Do I have to fight roaring fires that I can’t seem to put out both in my business and in my personal life?
- Does my personal life kind of suck because of my business?
- Do I feel like my company has direction or does it seem to be wondering in which every direction it wants to go?
- What is broken in my business and need to be fixed right now!
- What are the biggest messes in my business and personal life that need to be cleaned up?
- Do I work on managing the details or do I concentrate on the big picture?
- Have I just lost my “fire” for this business that I had when I started?
Now take off your rose colored glasses and look at the answers. What do they really say about you and your business? Can you accept these answers? If so, great, now you can move on to develop solutions based on clarity and honesty.
Life is short, why spend your time in a business that doesn’t give you back everything that you want and deserve? It is your time now! Move forward, “be the best that you can be”.
